Switching Power Supply Transformer Heating Cause
Sep 19, 2018

The switching power supply transformer is a power transformer with a switching tube. In addition to the voltage conversion function of the ordinary transformer, the circuit also has the functions of insulation isolation and power transmission, which are generally used in switching power supplies and the like involving high frequency circuits.

The main heating components in the switching power supply are semiconductor switching tubes, power diodes, high frequency transformers, filter inductors, and the like. Different devices have different methods of controlling the amount of heat generated. The power tube is one of the devices with high heat generation in the high-frequency switching power supply. Reducing its heat generation can not only improve the reliability of the power tube, but also improve the reliability of the switching power supply and improve the average time between failures.

The heat generated by the switch tube is caused by the loss. The loss of the switch tube is composed of two parts: the switch process loss and the on-state loss. The on-state loss can be reduced by using a switch with a low on-state resistance. The process loss is caused by the gate charge size and switching time. The reduction of the switching process loss can be reduced by selecting a device with a faster switching speed and a shorter recovery time. But more importantly, the losses are reduced by designing better control methods and buffering techniques. This can be greatly reduced by using soft switching techniques. Reducing the heat generated by the power diode, for AC rectification and snubber diodes, there is generally no better control technique to reduce the loss, and the loss can be reduced by selecting a high quality diode. For the rectification of the secondary side of the transformer, a more efficient synchronous rectification technique can be selected to reduce the loss. For the loss caused by high-frequency magnetic materials, the skin effect should be avoided as much as possible. For the effect of the skin effect, multiple thin enameled wires can be used to solve the problem.
